Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey has announced Centacare Catholic Country has been successful in gaining a $97,045 grant to develop Suicide Prevention Program.
The Building the Better Regions grant will service drought –affected communities across the Eyre and Western, Far North and Mid North regions of the state.
Mr Ramsey said, “We are aware that far too many people are tragically cutting their own lives short across rural and regional South Australia and while individuals are more likely to come forward with their problems than they were twenty years ago, we still have a long way to go.”
“Certainly drought has increased pressure on individuals and not just farmers, the knock-on economic effects of drought end up working their way through the whole community”, he said. “Centacare has a very good reputation and I am looking forward to them setting up the; Fields of Strength – Building foundations for rural suicide safety project.
“The project will build foundations for suicide safety in regional, rural and remote communities by training up to eight staff in proven prevention techniques – Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training and SafeTalk. Staff will deliver free training workshops to a broad range of community stakeholders in drought-affected communities across Eyre and Western, Far North and Mid North regions of South Australia.
“Projects such as this make our regional communities even better and safer places to live, work and raise a family and I’m excited to see the positive difference this funding will make to the community”, he said.
Communities in Grey will benefit from nearly $4 million under this round of the BBRF, taking the total funding under this and the previous scheme to more than $40 million across the electorate since we came to government.
“We have seen fantastic outcomes from the first two rounds and I have been very happy with the funding that has made its way into Grey communities. This announcement continues the Government’s commitment to caring for regional people and ensuring our regions thrive.”
