Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said funding under Round 6 of the Australian Government’s Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program will deliver upgrade works to six airstrips including Yorketown.
“Yorke Peninsula Council will receive $303,952 to seal the runway at the Yorketown airstrip,” he said.
“These upgrades ensure continued access to essential, potentially lifesaving health care, as well as fresh food, mail services and access to employment and education opportunities.
“I am looking forward to working with these communities to ensure we deliver the essential airstrip works they need.
“Upgrades like this will ensure that residents in the Grey community living in regional areas can remain well-connected, overcoming the effects of the tyranny of distance.
“Other airstrips in Grey to receive funding totaling $1,749,967 are Oak Valley, Oodnadatta, Marla, Elliston andport Liuncoln.
“I am delighted to see the Australian Government continuing its investment in vital infrastructure in our community, particularly through key air transport works such as these.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack said the Government was delivering better access and safety upgrades for remote community airstrips thanks to its 2018 Budget commitment of $28 million to extend the program over four years.
“Being connected to regional centres is vital for every remote community and I am pleased today to announce that these communities will receive the airstrip work they need,” he said.
