Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey wants to assure the people of Whyalla he is firmly focussed on recent announcements regarding the re-energising of the blast furnace, job losses and speculation rampant throughout the community about the future of Liberty OneSteel.
Recently there has also been the news of a temporary idling of the blast furnace following an interruption in the supply of coke.
“I have been in Canberra for the last two weeks but, have spoken to company management and taken the opportunity to fully brief the Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic, on the situation, who expressed his interest and support of steel in Whyalla, he said. “
“The company has informed me that despite the pause in production they will not be standing any employees down or reducing hours in the period.”
“We discussed the payment of suppliers and they informed me that while they have reached payment agreements with the big external contractors the company is concentrating its efforts on ensuring the smaller, locally-based contractors are paid on time.
“Further, Liberty OneSteel now has some new technology available which they believe will enable them to fully fire the furnace in 2-3 days and expect that to happen in the first week of September.
“I am very aware many rumours are swirling around within the community and particularly on electronic platforms, including speculation about interest from high visibility investors and financial organisations including visits to Whyalla. I have been unable to confirm the rumours and urge the people of Whyalla to remain calm.
“For those who post uncorroborated reports, it is not helpful. I am in favour of truth and transparency and will endeavour to do my best to keep the community informed of any change in circumstances.
“However, unfounded speculation causes stress to individuals and undermines the business confidence of the community, and I ask people to bear that in mind.”
